   Willemse, Wendy
   The Narcissist

No love at first sight
When you stood at my door
But it wasn’t first sight
We’d been here before.

Did I misunderstand?
Did you give me a clue?
Should I have known even then
It was all about you?

Would I have sent you away
Speared a stake through your heart
If what I know now
I knew from the start.

You called me your girl
I believed it was true
But I should have guessed
It was all about you.

No hero, no villain
No Superman
Just another cartoon
A punk Peter Pan.

As shallow
As teardrops staining my cheek
A fucked up man-child
Corroded and weak.

Words without meaning
Promises that break
A drunkard, a braggart
Apathetic and fake.

Sometimes I dream
Of settling the score
But as much as you burned me
You burned yourself more.

I’m resurrecting myself
By setting you free
This time, babe
It’s all about me.

The subject of the poem is a composite of several men. I don't have much of a romantic history but do I know how to pick them!
